Smith and Ian are two plant-based lovebirds whose (previously long-distance) relationship started via Instagram and blossomed on Snapchat. They soon began cooking together over FaceTime and the rest is history. Ian is a Wisconsin native, and Smith is originally from Atlanta, but they both live together in Chicago now. The first 8 months of their relationship took place almost exclusively over social media.
Here’s a quick rundown:
Ian first saw Smith when he turned up in his Instagram discovery feed “based on photos [he] liked.” Ian definitely liked what he saw, so he slid into Smith’s DM’s with a question about one of Smith’s tattoos. When Smith replied, Ian added him on Snapchat and began to low-key fan-girl message Smith from time to time.
Then, one day, Ian saw that Smith was in Chicago (thank you, Snapchat geofilters!), so he asked Smith to coffee and the rest is history.
From then on they chatted every day and night. Chatting turned into Snapchatting dinner and that turned into FaceTime cooking together. It started by agreeing on the same recipe and then preparing it together, coordinating when to move on to the next step, like “Are you ready to drop your pasta, yet?” That way everything was hot and ready at the same time and they could share the first bite. #dinnerdate
After Smith moved in with Ian in Chicago in February 2017, they continued sharing their in-person food and travel endeavors with their personal following. Now they are combining their loves of food, social media and writing to create this self-titled blog about their culinary, café and cervecería adventures.
